Sports Massage
Sports massage is one of the oldest and most effective forms of remedial therapy.
And it’s not just for athletes – everyone can benefit:
- Muscular tension can build up in the body as a result of poor posture, lifestyle habits, repetitive tasks and emotional stress.
- Injuries can occur during everyday activities, from gardening to lifting children.
Sports massage corrects bodily imbalances by manipulating and rehabilitating muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia to reduce muscle tension, alleviate stress and restore balance to the musculoskeletal system.
Use Sports Massage to:
Support your training:
- Sports massage can be used pre-workout to help you get the most from your training and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness by preparing muscles and easing tension.
- Regular preventative sessions allow you to train more consistently by addressing areas of muscle tension or discomfort early.
- After a strong workout, muscles can become tired and experience microscopic damage that contributes to soreness. Massage can help reduce discomfort, promote relaxation, and improve local circulation, supporting recovery. It can also help improve flexibility, reduce muscle stiffness, and enhance body awareness, supporting better movement quality and comfort during training.
- At all levels of sport, massage is an important part of training and recovery as it ensures muscles are in peak condition and irons out any niggles which may develop into injuries.
Heal injury:
Chronic muscle tension or injury can be associated with pain, inflammation, and reduced range of motion. Sports massage can help reduce the discomfort of muscle soreness, while increasing flexibility, thereby speeding up the healing process.
Reduce stress and improve wellbeing:
The power of touch has many physiological benefits. Skilled massage stimulates nerve endings, reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and improves sleep – all of which accelerate recovery and support overall wellbeing. Massage can also help athletes become more aware of their body, posture, and muscle tension, which can support focus and readiness during training or competition.
In my experience, many issues can be significantly improved through soft tissue work. Massage is often most effective when combined with movement therapy, and I often prescribe corrective exercises after a session to support long-term results.
